BELLE is an anime film that tells about an online world that is constantly changing, and is set in a virtual world called U which has 5 billion users. This theme seems to have become a familiar thing to Hosoda, where the director has previously worked on other anime films with virtual world themes such as Digimon Adventure: Children's War Game or Summer Wars. Apart from that, his films often raise themes such as maturity, family ties, parental and child affection, friendship between species and living things.

The anime film will tell the story of Suzu, a 17-year-old high school girl who loses her mother since she was a child due to an accident. Suzu now lives in a remote village with her father. The girl then joins the online world "U" and creates an avatar named Belle. He finally caught the attention of users in the online world because of his singing ability. Suzu then meets a mysterious figure that resembles a dragon. What will happen next?
