Shogakukan announced on Wednesday that Keisuke Makino and Karei's light novel series Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu (The Moon, Laika, and Nosferatu) is getting a television anime adaptation slated to premiere in 2021. The story of Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu is set in a fictional world, 10 years after the long war that divided the world into two superpowers: the United Republic of Zirnitra in the east, and the British Empire Arnak in the west. The two superpowers are now ambitious to fight each other in the space race.

In 1960, Union's Premier Gergiev announced Project Mechtat (Dream), a prestigious plan to launch a manned mission to the final frontier. To this end, Union founded the isolated city of Laika 44, where would-be cosmonauts compete for a planned manned mission into space, and scientists develop technology to make it happen, all in an environment of secrecy.

The story will center on Lev Leps, a would-be backup astronaut, and his new partner, the vampire Irina Ruminescu. As part of Operation Nosferatu, Project Mechtat will use Irina as a test subject for various conditions in space, and eventually as part of a manned mission, with Lev overseeing Irina's training as a cosmonaut. Shogakukan's Gagaga Bunko light novel launched the Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu novel series in December 2016, and the sixth volume of the novel series will ship on Thursday. Sojihogu released the manga adaptation of the novel on the Kodansha Comic Days website in March 2018, but went on hiatus starting January 2019 due to Sojihogu's poor health and has not yet continued.
